One of the biggest pitfalls in IELTS Writing is the overuse of basic linking words such as and, but, because. Instead, you should try to vary your cohesive devices by using a wide range of transitions, but don’t overdo it.

Examples of Linking Words by Function:

  • Addition: Moreover, Furthermore, In addition, Also, As well as, Besides

Example: “The product arrived late. Furthermore, it was damaged upon arrival.”

  • Contrast: However, On the other hand, Nevertheless, Yet, Despite this, In contrast

Example: “The product was well-packaged. However, it still arrived damaged.”

  • Cause and Effect: Therefore, Thus, As a result, Consequently, Because of this, For this reason

Example: “The laptop does not turn on. As a result, I cannot complete my work.”

  • Time/Sequence: First, Second, Finally, After that, Subsequently, Then, Next

Example: “First, I contacted customer service. Next, I followed their instructions to reset the device.”
