Organize Your Response Logically
IELTS Academic Task 1:
The structure for Academic Task 1 should include:
- Introduction: Paraphrase the task prompt. This brief paragraph introduces the visual information you’ll be summarizing.
- Overview: Provide a summary of the main trends or key features of the chart, graph, or diagram. The overview is critical to achieving a Band 7 or higher.
- Body Paragraphs (2-3 paragraphs): In these paragraphs, describe the data in more detail, making comparisons where necessary. Ensure that each paragraph covers a specific set of data or features. For example, one paragraph can cover rising trends, while another can focus on stable or falling trends.
- No Concluding Paragraph: No conclusion is necessary.
Example:
Introduction: “The bar chart illustrates the average number of hours worked per week by men and women in five different countries.”
Overview: “Overall, men worked more hours per week than women in all countries, with noticeable differences between the countries.”
Body Paragraph 1 (Rising trends): “In the UK and USA, the average working hours for men increased slightly over the period, while women’s hours remained relatively stable.”
Body Paragraph 2 (Falling trends): “In contrast, in Germany and Sweden, the working hours for both men and women showed a gradual decline.”
