When examiners assess cohesion, they look for the following:

Use of Cohesive Devices: These include linking words and phrases such as however, moreover, on the other hand. Use them correctly and sparingly.

  • Good Example: “I ordered the product two weeks ago. However, it has not arrived yet.”
  • Poor Example: “I ordered the product. Moreover, it was expensive. However, it came late. Therefore, I want a refund.” (Overuse of cohesive devices.)

Reference: This refers to the use of pronouns (it, they, this) to refer back to things mentioned earlier.

  • Good Example: “The phone arrived damaged. It is unusable, and I am requesting a refund.”
  • Poor Example: “The phone arrived damaged. The phone is unusable.”

Lexical Variety: Using different vocabulary instead of repeating the same words.

  • Good Example: “The book I received was damaged. This issue has happened before with other orders.”
  • Poor Example: “The book I received was damaged. The book was also not the one I ordered.”
