Each criterion (Fluency & Coherence, Lexical Resource, Grammatical Range & Accuracy, Pronunciation) is given a score from Band 0 to Band 9, based on performance. The four scores are then averaged to produce an overall band score for the Speaking section.

For example:

• Fluency & Coherence: 6
• Lexical Resource: 6
• Grammatical Range & Accuracy: 5
• Pronunciation: 6

The overall Speaking score would be the average of these four, which in this case is 5.75. The score is then rounded up or down to the nearest half-band, resulting in a Band 6 overall Speaking score.
