Ability to identify the correct answer while avoiding distractors (incorrect options that seem plausible). Multiple-choice questions test your ability to understand the passage and make distinctions between different pieces of information.

Tips for Band 7 and Above:

Read the question stem carefully: Before looking at the answer choices, read the question stem and identify keywords. Understanding the question properly will help you locate the relevant part of the passage more quickly.

Example: 

If the question asks, “Why did the company introduce a new policy?” focus on finding the part of the passage that explains the reason for the policy change, not on details about the policy itself.

Eliminate incorrect options: Multiple-choice questions often include distractors that can mislead you. Use the process of elimination to rule out the options that don’t fit the question or are only partially correct. This leaves you with fewer choices and increases your chances of selecting the correct one.

Look out for paraphrased information: Often, the correct answer is a paraphrased version of the information in the text, not a direct copy of the words used in the passage.
