In IELTS Task 1, you’ll need to compare data between categories or time periods. These expressions will help.
Higher than: Used when one value is greater than another.
Example: “The sales of Company A were higher than those of Company B in 2019.”
Lower than: Used when one value is smaller than another.
Example: “The population in the southern region was lower than that of the northern region.”
Similar to: To show when two data points are almost the same.
Example: “The unemployment rate in 2005 was similar to that of 2006.”
Almost the same as: To describe two data points that are very close in value.
Example: “The sales figures for January and February were almost the same as those in March.”
As much as: When two data points are equal in value.
Example: “In 2018, Company B sold as much as Company A.”
Twice as high as: When one value is double that of another.
Example: “The rate of inflation in 2019 was twice as high as in 2018.”
Three times lower than: When one value is three times smaller than another.
Example: “The number of students in the rural areas was three times lower than in urban areas.”
The most: The highest value.
Example: “In 2020, Germany produced the most electricity from renewable sources.”
The least: The lowest value.
Example: “The country with the least internet users in 2021 was Namibia.”
