IELTS Reading: Overview
About Course
The IELTS Reading section is a critical part of both the General Training and Academic modules. It evaluates a candidate’s ability to understand written English across a variety of contexts, from formal academic texts to more practical, everyday materials. The section is designed to assess how well candidates can grasp main ideas, understand detail, follow arguments, and interpret a range of complex vocabulary.
Both versions of the IELTS Reading section—Academic and General Training—test a wide array of reading skills, including:
- Reading for gist: Understanding the overall purpose of the text.
- Reading for main ideas: Identifying the central concepts or arguments presented.
- Reading for detail: Locating and interpreting specific pieces of information.
- Skimming: Quickly getting a general idea of the text without reading every word.
- Scanning: Searching for specific information or keywords.
- Inferring meaning: Drawing conclusions based on information that is implied but not explicitly stated.
- Understanding opinion, attitude, and purpose: Identifying the author’s viewpoint or intention.
