A complex sentence consists of one independent clause and at least one dependent (subordinate) clause. The dependent clause adds extra information to the sentence but cannot stand alone as a complete thought. Dependent clauses are introduced by subordinating conjunctions (because, although, since, if, etc.) or relative pronouns (who, which, that).
